VHR’s Charity Cycle Ride: The Captain’s Ride

VHR’s CEO Danny Brooks sets off on the Captain’s Ride across Australia in aid of charitable causes.

On 29th October 2018 Danny started The Captain’s Ride, the beginning of an epic journey across Australia. For the next week Danny will be spending up to 9 hours a day on a bike to support children with rare diseases.

This year’s Captain’s Ride features a cycle ride from Melbourne 800km towards Sydney and climbing 12,000 vertical metres. The team’s journey is the equivalent of cycling from sea level up to the top of Mount Everest, going back down to the bottom and then cycling halfway up again.

The Captain’s Ride 2018 involves more climbing than previous years and will offer the toughest challenge yet.

The Captain’s Ride: Supporting Children with Rare Diseases

The Captain’s Ride is the brainchild of ex-Australian Cricket Captain Steve Waugh. All proceeds go to the Steve Waugh Foundation which helps children with rare diseases and their families by providing:

  • Individual Grants – for medicine, specialized equipment and treatment therapies, for children and young adults (0-25yrs)
  • Respite Camps – designed to support the families of children with rare diseases
  • Raising Awareness, playing a leading role in sponsoring a coordinated approach to the promotion of World Rare Disease Day in Australia since 2009

The Steve Waugh Foundation works to give children and young adults a better quality of life, offering support and the opportunity to connect with others.

The Captain’s Ride: Day One

On the first day of the Captain’s Ride, Danny and the team achieved:

  • Cycling a 112km total distance
  • Tackling a 40km long hill – Danny was first to reach the top
  • Highlights – After getting off to a great (but chilly!) start, this morning’s freezing temperatures gave way to sunshine around midday and a warmer second half.
