Sustainable Development in the Marine Industry

In the run-up to the launch of Tracy Edwards’ global equality campaign and the relaunch of record-breaking yacht Maiden, we reveal the top three initiatives spearheading Marine sustainability across the globe.

Sustainability Initiatives In The Marine Industry:

1. Sustainability in Marine: Humanitarian AidSustainability in Marine

‘There are friends, and then there are boat friends. We're there in a pinch or in a disaster, no questions asked.’ Since September 2017 a small group of sailors under the name of Sailors Helping have delivered humanitarian aid to those whose homes and lives have been devastated by hurricanes and natural disasters across the world.

In the first few days following Hurricane Irma, Sailors Helping provided a phenomenal level of support, including:

  • Coordinating two planes to send £16,000 of aid to Anguilla and Tortola

  • Assisting an airplane evacuation in St. Martin

  • Working with Airbnb to provide free housing to displaced people

  • Raising $200,000 through fundraisers of sailing friends

Donate to Sailors Helping and support the Marine industry as sailors change and save lives.

2. Sustainability in Marine: Plastic in the Ocean

This year’s Volvo Ocean Race highlights sustainability and environmental concerns in the Marine industry. Plastic is choking and entangling turtles and seabirds and clogging the stomachs of creatures who mistake it for food, meaning that plastic has now entered every level of the ocean food chain and has begun to directly harm humans all over the world.

Volvo Ocean Race Team Turn the Tide on Plastic is leading an ecological initiative against the 8million tonnes of plastic in the ocean. Turn the Tide on Plastic aims to promote the United Nations’ Clean Seas Campaign to the 3million visitors attending the Volvo Ocean Race.

3. Sustainability in Marine: Human Rights

UNESCO reports that 130 million young women globally do not have access to education, with 90% of the poorest female children in Africa and Asia not completing primary education.

Two of the international Sustainable Development Goals aim to ‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ and to ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.’ UNESCO states that providing girls with a quality education will:

  • Dramatically reduce childhood marriage

  • Prevent early births and infant deaths

  • Increase women’s participation in the labour market

  • Narrow the gender pay gap

  • Improve women’s health

  • Help to eradicate poverty.

Founded by sailing record-breaker Tracy Edwards, The Maiden Factor aims to increase awareness of gender equality and raise funds to give women greater access and quality of education. Maiden, skippered by Tracy Edwards in 1989, saw the first all-female crew to both participate and achieve second place in the Volvo Ocean Race, and will serve as a symbol of women’s determination and achievements during a three-year world tour.

Maiden recently returned to Southampton for a full refit and will soon join the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta. Following its restoration Maiden will be launched on 24th July 2018 to sail in the Solent and take part in Cowes Week before beginning its three-year journey around the world, with Jordan, Dubai and India its first stopovers.

The Maiden Factor will help to provide 12 years of free and quality primary and secondary education for women from all around the world. The Maiden Message of Hope Relay will be represented by two female students on each leg of the world tour, carrying a message of hope, solidarity and progress around the world.

Support The Maiden Factor and contribute to gender equality and women’s access to quality education worldwide.
