The Spanish Marine Industry has grown massively over the last two years. Especially, places like Galicia have great growth potential due to a combination of characteristics.

In words of the ACLUNAGA (Galician Marine Cluster Association) president, Marcos Freire: “This year 2019 presents itself with great expectations. This will generate similar levels of activity, business growth and employment compared with 2018, with the hope of growing further and consolidating the competitiveness of our companies”.

In this article we are going to discuss the characteristics that makes this region ideal for working in the marine industry.

Why Spain Is Dominating The Marine Industry

Geographic Situation and Natural Conditions

The environmental conditions of Galicia are two of its biggest strengths. Proof of that is that Vigo has been included in the top five Spanish cities with the best weather.

Galicia is surrounded by more than 17,000 kilometres of coast, so the geographical location is ideal  for the recreational nautical industry. Vigo and Ferrol should be noted, the former because of the good natural conditions that it has, the latter because of Navantia’s Shipyard infrastructure.

The Ría de Vigo (Vigo’s estuary) has great natural infrastructure thanks to the Islas Cíes, and it allows great ease in docking manoeuvres.

Furthermore, the Port of Ferrol receives continuous traffic of merchant, fishing, military and recreational ships, thanks to the shelter provided by the estuary.

The Metal Industry

The metal industry in Galicia is closely related with the Marine Industry, it’s one of the main sources of employment, corresponding to 21% of GDP and providing over ten thousand people with jobs.

Now that the tax-lease crisis has been left behind, the demand for metalworkers has increased drastically, so it is the best time to find a job. According to ASIME (Galician Metalwork industry Association), 2019 will be a year of industry growth both in the automotive, marine, and metalworking industries.

Enrique Mallón, general secretary of the organization, assures that “with total security we will improve on our 2018 numbers”, and also that this increase will be happening in other complementary industries like aviation or construction.

Port Infrastructure

Galicia has 3 main ports: Vigo, A Coruña and Ferrol-San Cibrao, each one of them endowed with infrastructures that provide enough capacity to be among the best ports of Spain and Europe.

Vigo is a city whose port is key to its growth. Both ports were developed at the same time, making it difficult for the tourist to differentiate between them. It has a transatlantic dock of 60.000 m2 of surface area where we can also find other installations as the “Jardines del Cable”, the conference building of the Port of Vigo, warehouses and even a bus concourse; and also has one of the main leisure ports of the Ría de Vigo.

The Port of A Coruña has surpassed 15 million tonnes of cargo last year, establishing a record in its commercial activity, and reaffirming itself as the number one port for merchant traffic.

In addition to that, because of the total integration of the Marina-Perrote axis in the city, the port of A Coruña has consolidated itself as a space for leisure and sports.

Lastly, the Port of Ferrol has the most commercial activity among all of the ports that are managed by the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao.

Tourist Potential

This year, the president of the Tourism Cluster of Galicia Cesáreo Pardal said: the Galician tourism sector is estimated to reach 6,000,000 of tourists.

In the case of Vigo, the richness of the landscape of the Rías Baixas make it the perfect place to invest in the marine industry. Last summer, the number of visitors surpassed the ones of Santiago de Compostela, one of most popular areas in the region. That happens because the Ría de Vigo offers a large variety of leisure activities, a lot of them focused in the sea, in which its potential has not been totally exploited.

An increase in tourism benefits the industry directly: the more money is invested in the province, the more jobs will be created. As it is a coastal region, it exists thanks to a large demand in maritime activities and the companies which invest in them.

Sustainability

Currently, there are some projects in Galicia that have sustainability and environmental care as a fundamental pillar. In one side, coordinated by Agan+ in Galicia, there’s the European project “Capiten” (Atlantic Cluster for the Technological and Economic Innovation of the Marine Industry), directed by the government of Brittany (France) and supported with the participation of 18 partners in France, Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Portugal. Its goal is to work in the recreational sailing sector, with an approximate budget of 400,000 euros.

The main objective of this project will be to aid the economic development and employment levels in the Galician Marine Industry through the valuation of its natural and cultural assets, all of which will be done with a sustainable and respectful approach to the environment, based on the use of new technologies and materials.

Otherwise, Agan+ is developing “Ecodestin_3IN”, a sustainable maritime-fluvial and touristic development plan in collaboration with the Consellería do Mar, Portos de Galicia, Galicia Tourism and the Galician Port Foundation, whose goal is to transform Galicia and the North of Portugal in econautical and sporting destinations, creating new products and promoting them internationally. This project will benefit all towns, ports, entities, sport clubs and companies that work in the marine sector.

Besides that, the Port of Vigo is working constantly on the sustainable economic growth program “Blue Growth”, acclaimed by European organizations. One of the latest developments has been the involvement in a project to supply liquefied natural gas.

Galicia is clearly working towards a greener and more eco-efficient marine industry from which we will benefit in the long term. This is the future of the sector.
