The 22nd edition of the Superyacht Cup Palma begins in less than a week – take a look back at the best moments of the longest running Superyacht regatta in Europe.

History Of The Superyacht Cup Palma:

5. J Class Regatta

In 2013, the Superyacht Cup Palma held a J Class regatta for the first time. Hanuman, Lionheart, Ranger, Rainbow and Velsheda made up the five J’s that competed in that edition. Hanuman won the first two races, but every super yacht crossed the finish line with impressively, only five to five and a half minutes between each other.

In the third race, Hanuman was disqualified as she began prematurely and was consequently reprimanded 6 points. Due to this the competition tightened, but nevertheless Hanuman was granted final victory with just one point of difference with Lionheart and Ranger when crossing the finish line.

4. Unfurled

Unfurled was undoubtedly the talk of the Superyacht Cup Palma 2014. The boat, designed by Frers NA, not only obtained a great victory in Class 2, but was also crowned the overall winner of the edition, beating 26 other participants.

However, most surprisingly of all, Unfurled completed her win with a total of four families on board the boat! The crew included Ross Field and his son Campbell, Gary Wiseman along with his wife Sue and their son Sam, as well as Connor, the son of John Barret, who was the project manager – not forgetting the daughter of the boat owner.

3. 2015’s Nail-Biting Performance

In 2015, the 55m classic ketch Marie built by Vitters, was the undisputed, hat-trick winner of the Superyacht Cup, remaining unbeaten after the 3 races.

Additionally, the regatta saw Class B offer an intense and nail-biting competition; overall, it was tight competition between Odin, Inouï, Kiboko and Win Win fighting fearlessly for the final victory.

The first race finished with a victory for Inouï just 5 seconds ahead of Odin on corrected time, while second place was won by Kiboko - reaching the finish line with just 3 points difference between the four boats.

2. 20th Anniversary

In 2016, the Superyacht Cup Palma celebrated its 20th anniversary. In this edition, the Baltic built Win Win superyacht achieved the objective that she was pursuing since being built two years prior, as she was capable of taking the sought-after trophy as overall winner.

The 33m carbon flyer beat other highly competitive yachts such as the two Vitters built, Inouï and the new Unfurled, thanks to her impressive first two wins; this gave her the final victory after finishing the competition tied with Unfurled on 6 points.

1. Class B

Last year’s edition saw another victory of Win Win in her Class, but the attention was drawn to Class B, which offered a really exciting competition during the three days.

The 32m Bolero will be the defender of the title in 2018 since he achieved the overall victory last year. This Frers-designed modern, classic yacht swept past 27,5m Atalante 1 and her newer sister the 39m Atalante - both designed by Hoek Design and built by Claasen. They were two challenging contenders; however, the final victory went to Bolero as she won two races.

Following the resurgence of the Class, the 2018 edition of the Superyacht Cup Palma will enjoy the return of J-Class yachts after four years of absence. Velsheda (38m), Ranger (41m), Topaz (43m) and Svea (44m) have already confirmed their participation.
